Problem
Our clients loved their charming two-bedroom timber cottage in Tighes Hill, NSW, but the layout just wasn't keeping up with their lives. The main living areas felt dark, cramped, and completely cut off from that beautiful Australian sun. They needed more room to breathe—specifically, a new laundry, a third bedroom, a dedicated study space, and a private master suite with an ensuite. The challenge was adding all of this functional space without destroying the home’s original character or swallowing up the backyard.
Solution
At Design Pad Architecture, we realised the answer wasn’t to build out, but to build up. We replaced the majority of the old roof structure to insert a brand-new first floor. This level now hosts a spacious master bedroom, a walk-in robe, an ensuite, and a flexible third bedroom.
To solve the darkness downstairs, we designed a striking architectural void wrapped by the new staircase. By knocking down restrictive internal walls on the ground floor, we created one generous, open-plan living and dining area. We then strategically placed high windows over the stairwell. The study nook was positioned right on the landing, overlooking this void. This clever layout allows the landing to capture sweeping, distant views while the void acts as a light funnel, dumping gorgeous northern sunshine straight down into the heart of the living space below. We also seamlessly tucked in a highly functional new laundry on the ground level.
Outcome
The result is a bright, airy, and modern family home that feels twice its original size. By thinking vertically, we delivered every single item on our clients' wish list while drastically improving their daily quality of life. The once-dark cottage is now flooded with natural northern light, and the clever study landing offers an inspiring place to work with a view. Our clients got the space and luxury of a brand-new build, all while staying in the Tighes Hill neighbourhood they love.
