THE TREETOP TERRACES, NEW LAMBTON HEIGHTS

PROBLEM

Imagine owning a fantastic, sprawling backyard but having absolutely no way to enjoy it. That was the reality for our clients in New Lambton Heights. They loved their classic three-bedroom brick veneer home, but it suffered from a major layout flaw: it was completely cut off from the outdoors.

Because the house sat on a steeply sloping site, the beautiful backyard felt miles away. The only way to reach it was through a cramped side door, followed by a trek down a sketchy, steep path along the edge of the house. It was awkward, inconvenient, and meant the yard went completely unused. The family desperately needed a functional connection to their land, plus a bit of extra breathing room inside.

SOLUTION

We knew a standard ground-level extension wouldn't cut it on this slope, so we decided to think outside the box. We expanded the footprint of the home by designing a structural addition that suspends out above an over shadowed section of concrete. This clever engineering allowed us to add a bright new dining room and a quiet, dedicated study right where the land falls away.

To fix the backyard disconnect, we focused on the heart of the home: the kitchen. We punched through the old exterior wall to give direct access to outdoor dining. From this new exit, we designed a series of beautiful timber decks that step down the natural slope of the site. Instead of a jarring drop, the level changes became a feature, creating an easy, flowing transition from the indoor cooking zone right down to the grass.

OUTCOME

The transformation completely changed how this family lives. By floating the dining room and study over the slope, we captured stunning elevated views and flooded the home with natural light.

The cascading decks completely solved the access issue. The owners no longer must brave a steep, narrow side path just to touch grass. Now, the kitchen opens seamlessly to an expansive outdoor entertaining area. It has turned a once-isolated brick house into a modern, split-level haven perfect for weekend BBQs and easy indoor-outdoor living.
