The Problem
The original single-fronted cottage suffered from a poorly planned layout typical of its era. A series of old lean-to extensions left the heart of the home completely isolated from natural light. The kitchen and living areas were small, dark, and entirely disconnected from the backyard. The property lacked necessary storage, functional zone separation, and the seamless indoor-outdoor flow essential for the relaxed Newcastle lifestyle. Furthermore, the existing structure suffered from poor thermal efficiency, making it uncomfortably hot in summer and freezing in winter.
The Solution
Our design strategy focused on retaining the characterful front bedrooms while demolishing the restrictive rear add-ons to make way for a striking modern extension. We introduced a soaring raked ceiling over a new open-plan kitchen, dining, and living pavilion. Large, strategically placed north-facing highlight windows flood the living spaces with winter sun while blocking the harsh summer heat. Polished concrete floors act as a thermal mass, regulating indoor temperatures naturally. Glass sliding doors dissolve the barrier between the new living hub and a custom-designed timber deck, extending the usable living space into the garden. Prior to this stage of work, we designed a double garage with studio above to maximise the usability of the site which was completed in 2016. This final stage saw the entire project come to a successful completion.

The result is a light-filled, energy-efficient sanctuary that honours its Maryville roots. The seamless transition from the restored historical hallway to the ultra-modern extension creates a beautiful architectural narrative.
