Problem
Our clients loved their Merewether location but felt their traditional, single-dwelling block wasn't reaching its full potential. They wanted to unlock financial independence and gain long-term lifestyle flexibility. The ultimate goal was to split the single property into two premium, semi-detached homes under separate strata titles. This setup would allow them to live comfortably in one residence while generating rental income from the other. However, the north-facing block came with a tricky layout challenge. Because of the orientation, standard window placements meant the interiors would miss out on vital sunlight, leaving the main living areas feeling dark and closed off.

Solution
Design Pad Architecture tackled this challenge head-on with a smart, solar-conscious layout. We designed two distinct dwellings sharing a fire-rated party wall, placing secure, enclosed parking at the street front for maximum convenience. To beat the daylight dilemma, we introduced a stunning central lightwell into the core of each home. This architectural feature acts as a funnel for natural sunlight, drawing rays from the east and west straight down into the heart of the centralised dining rooms and kitchens. For a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle, the main living zones open up completely to private courtyards designed for alfresco dining. Finally, we used contrasting exterior cladding techniques on each side, giving both homes a completely unique identity instead of a copy-paste duplex look.
